AUTHOR: Jim Trelease, 2006-2007 Edition
Trelease devotes a large part of The Read Aloud Handbook stressing the importance of reading aloud to children and even teenagers. The chapters are well organized in an easy to follow format, with sub sections that make for quick short readings. He takes the reader through the Dos and Don'ts of Reading Aloud answering many of the questions parents, grandparents and others often ask. This chapter gives a list of the dos and don'ts. The lists are very complete and should put any person at ease about reading aloud. There is a chapter delegated to SSR or Sustained Silent Reading and how it is a natural partner to Reading Aloud. He explains SSR and gives many great ideas for parents to use to incorporate this technique along with reading aloud in the home. One chapter is all real-life personal testimonies from parents and teachers sharing their success with reading aloud to their children and students.
The book includes 115 pages of suggested books for reading aloud. The book's title, author, number of pages, and the appropriate age level are given for each. This is truly a great resource for anyone hesitant about selecting a book to read aloud with youngsters. The book list contains books for pre-school age children all the way through high school age.
The thing I liked about this book was how I could read a few pages and put it down because the sections in the chapters are short but filled with wonderful information and strategies.
