Elaine K. McEwan, Ed.D. 30 years in public education as teacher, elementary principal, assistant superintendent for instruction: author of many books for parents wrestling with education issues and administrators struggling with education's disarray.
This is a book for parents fearful their children aren't learning anything and ". . . nobody seems to care." If you hope your local school is a good one, she tells you how to find out for sure. If you hope it's a good school but wonder sometimes, this book will give you ways to think about your concerns. If you are fearful and mistrustful, Angry Parents. . .is a must read. A very constructive book, it pulls no punches but takes no cheap shots either. If your schools are good ones, you'll heave a sigh of relief. If they're not, you'll know how and why.
It's worth reading cover to cover, as are all her books, but it can be read by sections also. The book contains several appendices that unravel "edu-speak". It contains over 50 web sites that focus on education issues, a book list on no-nonsense reading instruction, a balanced pro and con listing of arguments about Progressive vs. Direct Instruction education philosophies.
If something in these brief paragraphs stimulates you to borrow a library copy, or purchase your own copy or start a book club reading and discussing it, wonderful! You'll learn a lot you didn't know and that may frighten you if you're a parent. If you're not quite ready to read it yet and want more details, the next page will brief you on the content of each chapter.
If you're concerned or uncertain about the quality of education where you are, this book will clear up or crystallize a lot of worries. An excellent group study book. Chapter 7 tells how to make a difference.
